Stayo

Background

Stayo is a serviced apartment company based in Central London. The business runs more than 100 apartments across London, offering an experience very much like a hotel, but in bigger rooms, with kitchens, bathrooms, multiple bedrooms, and a lounge space. The apartments could be anything from 600 sq ft to their penthouses which are closer to 3000 sq ft, making them perfect for those slightly longer stays for long distance travellers.

Requirements

Stayo was experiencing a number of problems due to the rapid expansion of the business. They had gone from 38 apartments to 127 in around 12 months. One of the key challenges was resourcing and getting access to people with relevant experience.

Simon Scott, CEO, shared these issues with a friend who had been facing similar challenges. His friend mentioned that they were working with Resource Worldwide, and Simon believed that it could be a good fit.

Simon said: “When my friend told me about Resource Worldwide, I immediately had the usual concerns, but she was quick to alleviate those fears. She told me that Resource Worldwide provides proper people working proper hours, and all who have the proper qualifications. It sounded like something to explore.''

The Solution

Stayo’s biggest resourcing problem was finding enough people to work the hours needed thanks to the UK’s competitive working landscape. It wasn’t about the pay or the cultural environment. The problem was that there simply weren’t enough people looking for jobs in that space. Simon was left with no choice but to explore other avenues. And Resource Worldwide solved their issues very easily.

In fact, Simon said: “Working with Resource Worldwide allowed us to solve the biggest problem we had of all, and what more could we ask for.”

Challenges

The biggest challenge the company faced was running a night shift. Prior to Resource Worldwide, when guests rang after a certain time, they'd be linked to a UK based answering service. But this service didn't understand or didn't connect to the Stayo systems. They were a separate entity and not an extension of Stayo’s company.

However, in the small hours of the morning, guests aren’t calling with basic problems. It could be that a guest is locked out or the fire alarm has gone off. These are significant issues.

Simon explained: “Stayo needed proper people who had a calming influence on the scenario, giving real guest level experience - but through the night. Post pandemic, that shift pattern has been hard to fit. But thanks to Resource Worldwide, we now do it quite well.

“We’ve had some people now for six months, and it's been very consistent. These are now workers for our business but via Resource Worldwide.”

The Future

“My advice is to take this level of resourcing seriously. Look into exactly what Resource Worldwide is.

“This isn’t about cheap staff in another location. You’re actually gaining access to people with proper relevant experience, who know what they're doing, and are qualified. It is allowing you to expand your business with the right resource.



“The location of people is probably less relevant than the skill set they bring and their ability to solve the problems within a business themselves. I would recommend that people focus on that, and perhaps almost leave assumptions at the door and approach with an open mind. Think first about the problems you're trying to solve, not necessarily what your pre-conceptions of the solutions are.
